JAMB Reduces Exam Questions And Time, Use Of Mouse Scrapped Out

The Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, on Wednesday said the board may reduce the timeline for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations (UTME) from three hours to two hours.
Similarly, Use of English that used to have 100 questions will be reduced to 60 questions while the other subjects will be reduced to 40 questions each.
He further stated that question papers will be uploaded five minutes to the examinations in order to check malpractice and questions leakage.
He made this known during the Strategic Planning retreat on Supervision and Evaluation of 2017 UTME examinations.
He said: “As for the 2017 UTME, it is likely we reduce the duration of the examinations. We are looking at two hours for the examinations instead of the present three-hour timeline. This is in line with international best practices.
“As for the candidates, for their age, the maximum time they can sit for examinations is two hours. Even in terms of international standard, for primary school pupils, the maximum time for examinations is between 45 minutes and one hour.”
He said JAMB has embraced new technology which will make the UTME comfortable to write by students in privileged environment and those in rural areas.
He equally confirmed that about 300,000 candidates might sit for the mock UTME examinations on April 8 which will be used to test run its new technology to make its examinations easier for students.

JAMB Scraps The Use Of Mouse WhileThey Adopts The Use of The “Eight-Key Device” System For 2017 CBT Exam

In order to deal with the challenge of computer low level literacy of some candidates, especially with the phobia for the mouse, the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board, JAMB has disclosed that it will adopt an “eight-key device” for the 2017 UTME.
Speaking during the Strategic Planning retreat on Supervision and Evaluation of 2017 UTME examinations the JAMB Registrar noted that in order to ensure equity and level playground for all candidates taking the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, the Board has designed a system that will allow candidates use only eight (8) keys without the use of the mouse.

All the candidates need to do is to press the letters A,B,C,D for responses (answers) to questions and keys P, N, S and R representing different functions as follows:
P = Previous question
N = Next question
S = Submit responses when candidate has finished examination
R = Reverse (do not intend to go further to submit again)
According to him, this new method will eradicate the challenge of low computer literacy and phobia for mouse by some candidates.
On the new arrangements for the visually impaired candidates, the JAMB Registrar said Digital Bridge Institute in partnership with the board has agreed to set up three dedicated centres in Abuja, Lagos and Kano in 2018.
But for the 2017 UTME, board has reached an understanding with the association for the blind persons in Nigeria and blind students in Lagos that an abridged approach would be used for the 2017 UTME, whereby all prospective blind candidates would be invited to three centres in the country for special assessment in their subjects of choice and relevance to their desired courses and programmes.

JAMB ELIGIBILITY FOR O'LEVEL STUDENTS

UTME 2017: JAMB clarifies position, says awaiting results candidates can apply

Now you know Why people are not too interested in the forthcoming Utme Registration...(But the eligibility has been confirmed)
The Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB), has clarified its position on candidates awaiting results being able to write admission examinations into tertiary institutions.
The examination body had initially barred candidates without their Ordinary Level results from sitting for the Universities Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).
The board’s initial stand was based on the fact that many institutions have admitted candidates on merit only for them to discover that such candidates do not have qualified O’levels results or the right combination for admission.
Such schools had to delete and start the process all over again, thereby denying other qualified candidates the opportunities for admissions, JAMB said initially.
However, JAMB on Thursday said candidates awaiting results are eligible to register and sit for the UTME exams.
JAMB’s spokesman, Fabian Benjamin, who confirmed this to GREATMIND PUBLICATIONS, however said that any candidate who fails to upload their result between May and August, would not be confirmed to gain admission into any tertiary institution.
According to him, this would enable JAMB grant admission to only qualified candidates who are ready to advance their educational pursuit in tertiary institutions, conserve resources and also provide credible data.
“Nigerians are still not clear whether candidates with awaiting results will write our exams or not,” he said. “Today, we want to make it categorically clear that candidates with awaiting results are eligible to register and sit for our examinations. However, the board will not confirm any admission for any candidate with awaiting result.
“All candidates who are desirous of tertiary education are to upload their O’ Level result on our site. We don’t want to be giving admissions to candidates that are not qualified to be admitted. It has been discovered over time that most of the times when these candidates are admitted, they don’t meet the requirements.
“You have from May up to August to upload your result. At the point of admission we would have sieved our records and any candidate who has not uploaded his or her result at that point, is not eligible for admission.
“We have a good number of candidates who have written their exams in years past and they have their results ready waiting for this process, we will factor those ones and the few ones that will get their results before August. We are not working for those that will be writing their exams. But if by chance you write your O’ Level examinations and JAMB this year and your result is ready, good for you.”
He added that candidates, who are not computer literate, have a choice of applying for a UTME mock examination at a fee of N700 nationwide.
Mr. Benjamin explained that the UTME mock examination was optional and aimed at allowing students have a feel of the Computer Based Test (CBT), especially those ignorant of the CBT process.
